Russia's representative to the Eurovision 2016 song contest will be Sergey Lazarev, singing the song "You are the only one". Lazarev said he only agreed to participate in this year’s contest because of his love for the song. Citing the pop piece's magnetism and force as key points of attraction, the  former member of the group Smash!! seemed stoked at the announcement via program on the Rossiya TV channel.

The song, written in collaboration in between former Eurovision contenstant, Filip Kirkorov and Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos, will compete with 43 other songs in this year's Eurovision event in Stockholm, Sweden. The already popular music video featuring Lazarev and Miss Russia runner-up, Vladislava Yevtushenko below already has almost one million views.

Lazarev's success as a singer can be traced back to his part in the successful duo Smash!! (in Russian СМЭШ!!) a Russian pop team formed in 2000 by Sergey Lazarev and Vlad Topalov. It was their music video for "Belle" the duo became famouis for after it topped MTV Russia's chart for 6 months and entered the list of top 20 clips of the past five years. Their debut album Freeway sold over a million discs in Russia and the CIS. Lazarev has had a relatively successful solo career since the mid-2000's, and he competed in the Eurovision 2008 contest, finishin fourth.

The song "You are the only one" was produced by Eurovision veteran Philipp Kirkorov who assembled what some say is a dream team of music professionals.
