Russian Photographer Sergey Ponomarev Wins the Pulitzer

Russian photographer Sergey Ponomarev has won the Pulitzer Prize in the category of Breaking News Photography for his photograph of refugees adrift at the Greek Island of Lesvos. 

One of a team of three New York Times photographers, Ponomarev's work is one of some three thousand entries the competition recieved for judging this year. The photographer's journey below offers some context.

Along with fellow NYTs colleagues, Mauricio Lima, Tyler Hicks and Daniel Etter, Sergey is a war photographer who portrayed the gripping tale of determined migrants seeking refuge in Europe. 

The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious competitions for photojournalists.
