In news from Krasnogorsk, the centre of Sergiev Posad will become pedestrian-only zone in the next few years. The head of the Sergiev Posad district, Sergey Pakhomov announced the creation of this new tourism cluster in order to further the development of tourism to the city.
According to Pakhomov, the city's first real suburbs, 182 hectares of which are to be transformed, will include the creation of a small town around the Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, one of the greatest of Russian monasteries. The initiative is also to include the building of alternative traffic routes to go around the pedestrian zone. Sergiev Posad, which already receives upwards of 1.5 million tourists annually, is an important touristic center within Golden Ring, and plays a role in the regional economy.
